Spalding United march on, FA Cup progress for Peterborough Sports, rare wins for Wisbech Town and Deeping Rangers, FC Peterborough victorious

Spalding United moved to within a point and a place of the National League North play-off places after a comfortable 2-0 win over Southport at the Sir Halley Stewart Field on Saturday.

‘The Tulips’ despatched the former Football League club with a first-half strike from Bart Cybulski and a second-half header from Sam Straughan-Brown to move up to eighth in the table.

It’s two home wins on the spin for Spalding who have a long trip to next-to-bottom Spennymoor Town on Tuesday (September 8).

Peterborough Sports made progress in the FA Cup today, but Bourne Town and Yaxley have Tuesday replays away from home and Stamford AFC bowed out to an 87th minute goal at home to Mickleover.

It was first qualifying round action and Sports were easy 4-0 winners over lower level Ipswich Wanderers. Leon Lobjoit continued his excellent form with two goals, while Harvey Williams and Finn O’Boyle also netted. The second qualifying round draw will take place on Monday.

Bourne and Yaxley will also be in the hat after second half equalisers from Zac Allen and Kieran Hibbins respectively earned 1-1 draws against Boldmere St Michaels and Buckhurst Hill.

There was some rare joy for Deeping Rangers who grabbed a 90th minute equaliser in their United Counties League Cup tie at Selston through Harvey Thorne before winning a penalty shootout 6-5.

In Premier Division North Blackstones moved four points clear of the drop zone with a fine 3-2 home win over Newark Town. Rufus Brooks scored twice with Josh Sennett also on target.

David Yisah, Derick Dadzie and Domingos Sanha scored as FC Peterborough won 3-0 at lowly FC Stratford in the Premier Division South.

March Town are second, two points off top spot with two games on hand, in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division after a handsome 4-0 home success over Woodbridge Town. Toby Allen, Rio Henson and Charlie Bowen were among the March scorers.

Wisbech Town picked up their first win of the season at this level as goals from Paulius Falcao and Dylan Edge secured a 2-0 success over Mildenhall Town.

A goal from Keane Rippon-Hart was enough for Whittlesey Athletic to pip Wivenhoe Town 1-0 in Division One North, but Netherton United went down 4-1 at Diss Town despite taking an early lead through Kyial West. A straight red card for centre-back Taylor Hunter at 2-1 didn’t help.
