Robbie Savage demands more from his Peterborough United players as he insists they must win games like at Bromley

Manager Robbie Savage has told his Peterborough United players they must be better in the final third.

The message came after Posh rescued a 1-1 draw away at Bromley in the 93rd minute thanks to Vernon Masara’s first goal for the club.

Posh had trailed from the 10th minute onwards, but eventually recovered to claim their fifth point in their four league games under Savage.

But, while the Posh boss praised the character of his side for continuing to push right until the end, he was left disappointed with the amount of spurned opportunities to create more goals.

Savage said: “We conceded from a set-piece after 10 minutes. It was slightly fortuitous, but it fell to the player you’d expect to put it away. Then we grew into the game and we were dominant in the first half. We have a brilliantly worked set piece and Harry Leonard had to score the header. We played against the wind, we moved the ball quickly, but we haven’t tested the keeper as much as we would like again.

“We can’t get into the final third as often as we do and hit the first man or the ‘keeper. It was wave after wave, but it is disappointing. We have to be winning these games if we have any ambition of climbing up that table.

“We can’t be that dominant and not test the’ keeper. We have to be better with the ball and not try and force things.

“We played well, it’s one of the best we’ve played away from home. We were good at Leicester, but we were better today in terms of getting into areas. We have got to pick people out when we get the ball across. We will work on it though and I can say I am proud of my players because they kept going.

"I want to credit Lucca Mendonca as well. He’s made two unbelievable challenges. What a kid, he was magnificent, he played above his years. It’s great to see Tom O’Connor back as well.

“There were some outstanding performances. Ethan Williams got into some pockets and they couldn’t live with our wide players at times.

“It’s a massive thing for anyone to see that this young group keep going.

“We have got to be better, but it’s one defeat in four. We could have drawn all four and have four points, but we want to win games. We should be coming to Bromley and be winning these games. We’ve taken five points from Leicester, Burton, Huddersfield and Bromley, I would have liked six or seven or even nine or 12 but one defeat in four is a positive start. We could definitely be better though.”

Posh are back in action on Tuesday night (October 27, 7:45pm) when they travel to Valley Parade to face Bradford City for a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter finals. Bradford drew 0-0 at Oxford on Saturday, their third goalless draw in four matches. Posh are next in action in League One next Saturday (October 31) with a match at home against Luton Town.
