Peterborough residents could be set to experience highest maximum council tax rise again

Peterborough City Council is considering plans to increase council tax by the highest amount allowed for the 2027/28 financial year.

The council is proposing a maximum rise of 4.99% from April 1, 2027.

If passed, this would mean that the Band R rate of council tax in Peterborough is set to rise from £1,836.72 to £1,928.37.

Budget consultation documents, created by the council, state that despite this increase Peterborough's Band D rate remains one of the lowest in the country and the lowest in Cambridgeshire.

The proposal will be discussed, along with the reset of the council’s financial plan for 2027/28 at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting (October 27).

If approved, then the consultation will run from October 27 to December 8.

In her foreword to the consultation documents, Council Leader Shabina Qayyum said: “\/\/hen I became Leader of Peterborough City Council a little over a year ago one of my main priorities was to ensure the council moved forward on a more stable financial footing.

"We have made great strides forward with this. An Independent External Assurance Review by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) carried out this year concluded that the council has made significant improvements to its financial management.

“However, this review also recognised the challenges that remain for the council, particularly in relation to our low level of reserves and managing areas of high demand, particularly in Children's Services where care placement costs are high and the number of children in our care is increasing, and in Adult Social Care, where demand continues to grow.

"It's these pressures which are contributing to a projected £7.4m gap in our 2027/28 budget.”
