Firefighters were called after the two lorries caught fire in the incident – destroying the vehicles and badly damaging the road.

Cambridgeshire Police said that the driver of the other lorry, a 43-year-old man from Saltburn, Cleveland, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 50-year-old suffered minor injuries in the incident. He has now been bailed until October 28.

The northbound carriageway of the A1 was closed for almost all of Tuesday, while there were also delays on the southbound carriageway while one lane was resurfaced.

Officers are now urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either vehicle in the moments leading up to it, to come forward. They are particularly keen to hear from motorists with dashcam footage.

Anyone with information should contact police via the force website, quoting Operation Oystercatcher. Anyone without internet access should call 101.

Police have confirmed that the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by the force's Professional Standards Department in relation to an earlier incident involving one of the vehicles.
