There is an 'avalanche' of goals coming for Peterborough United according to an 'uber-optimistic' chairman

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony remains ‘uber-optimistic’ about his team’s prospects this season...as long as his big hitters can live up their reputations.

MacAnthony delivered another bravura performance on the latest edition of his Hard Truth podcast, given his side sit 22nd in League One having won just two of their 13 matches this season.

MacAnthony believes it’s just a matter of time before his players start delivering ‘an avalanche’ of goals. Only two teams – Bradford City and AFC Wimbledon – have scored fewer than the 11 League One goals Posh have scored this season.

But the chairman accepts that improvement needs to start now.

On a podcast released on Wednesday evening, MacAnthony said: “No-one is coming to save us. No-one is coming to rescue us. There is a transfer window opening in January, but you can’t save a club in January. We are currently over the salary cap so we can’t sign anyone until we move players on so we have to dig in, knuckle down and work our nuts off to make any turnaround happen ourselves.

"For the next two months it really is on us and I am still a firm believer in this squad and in the management team. I’m uber-optimistic about our chances.

"We’ve had something like 148 shots in the last seven games and if that carries on it’s physically impossible for us not to start winning games. It’s also physically impossible for one of the best number nines in the league to keep missing chances. I feel there is an avalanche coming. People might call me deluded, but we cannot keep looking so dangerous and yet not score goals.

"I like the way we are responding to disappointments. I like the way we keep going. We don’t give up, but we just can’t finish our dinner. I like our manager who is relentlessly positive in everything he does. I like the fact he will get two strikers on the pitch to try and save a game, even if it didn’t work at the weekend.

"We have so much to be optimistic about. We need to stop killing ourselves by conceding early goals and set piece goals, and by missing so many scoring chances.

“But we need our big hitters to come good. We need Sam Hughes and Tom O’Connor to stay fit. Sam is vocal and a great leader and looked really good when he came on as a substitute last weekend. Tom is a class act. We need Matt Garbett to run League One games like he should and Harry Leonard to come good. We want Liam Kelly to show why we signed him and we have one of the best goalkeepers in the division in Alex Bass.

"That’s six players I have mentioned who are good, experienced quality performers and they need to go ‘bang’ and give us 8-9 out of 10 performances every week rather than 5-6 or 7 out of 10. Some have been injured too often and our younger players, who are on a fraction of the wages, have been our better players recently.

"Bass has won a promotion, O’Connor has won three promotions, Kelly has won promotions and Harry Ashfield has won a promotion. Harley Mills has played over 100 EFL games so we have plenty of Football League experience and players who have won EFL trophies so it’s all in place.

“One of the players in a team meeting recently said ‘at some stage we have to look in the mirror’ and I love that players have started to speak up.

"I’ve seen us play the likes of Leicester, Huddersfield, Luton, Bradford City and some other good football teams, and if that’s the best League One has to offer than we can definitely win many games. We should have scored goals against all of them. If we can win a couple of games in a row, we will go on and win three or four.

"It might seem mad, but I’m still really optimistic, really confident.”
