Peterborough RUFC set up a tasty home game with league leaders after securing a fourth win in a row

Peterborough RUFC have set up a mouthwatering clash with league leaders Olney at Fortress Fengate next Saturday (2pm kick off).

Borough had to work hard to see off a very competitive Old Saltleians side on their own turf in tricky conditions in their latest outing, but a fourth win in five Regional 2 Midlands East games teed them up perfectly for the visit of unbeaten Olney.

It finished 29-19 to Borough against a team who belied their position of third from bottom. The city side’s tries were scored by Murphy Hill, Dewi Pearce, Rob Jacobs, Luke Swindells and Robert Mound, while Liam Shields added two conversions.

"A year ago, we might well have lost that game,” Borough director rugby Pete Kolakowski said. “But the boys are learning to work things out on the pitch and improving every week. We had a much changed side due to injuries and unavailability, but several lads really stepped up.

"Dewi Pearce’s arrows at the lineout were spot on, particularly in the poor weather conditions. Will Bell was outstanding, making countless tackles and carrying hard throughout. In the backs, Rob Jacobs stood out again.

“My man of the match was Luke Swindells, who stepped into the prop position and put in a massive shift. He epitomises Borough rugby. He gives absolutely everything for the team, puts others before himself and never takes a backward step. That’s the attitude we have running through the whole squad.

“While individual performances get recognition, what matters most to us is celebrating the basics of hard work, selflessness and lads putting the team first. I can’t praise the squad enough for how they’ve responded to the challenges.

“The feeling in the group is excellent. The boys are working hard, enjoying their rugby and, most importantly, bringing the Borough ‘dog’ back and I absolutely love seeing that.”

Stamford lost 24-5 at Olney on Saturday.

**Oundle seconds maintained top spot and a perfect playing record in the Counties 1 Midlands East (South) Division with a hard-fought 39-17 win at Market Bosworth.

Tries from Mateaki Ma’asi, Jack Sharpley, and Lockie Brown and a conversion from Harry Winch gave Oundle a narrow 17-12 lead at half time in awful conditions. Two second half tries from Ma’asi, a second try for Brown and a try from Will Ivens completed the scoring. Winch added one more conversion.

Oundle have a top-of-the-table clash against fellow unbeaten side Newbold-on-Avon at Occupation Road next Saturday (October 31, 2pm kick off).

The unbeaten first team are also at home to Guernsey in a National 2 East League fixture (1pm).
