Peterborough United boss sorry to see Gustav go, but club now have a big transfer decision to make

Peterborough United manager Luke Williams insists he was sorry to see Gustav Lindgren leave London Road.

But Williams admits the 24 year-old forward received a fantastic offer from Swedish top-flight club BK Hacken, one that was ultimately too good to turn down.

Posh are now weighing up whether to put their faith in rookie striker Pemi Aderoju’s ability to act as back-up to top scorer Harry Leonard, or to bring in another attacking player during the January transfer window.

Williams and members of his management staff enjoyed a recruitment meeting with Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony and director of football Barry Fry on Tuesday.

Williams said: “I am sad to see Gustav go. I really enjoyed working with him. Gustav has strong qualities and was more than capable of starting for us, but Harry’s form has been so good in a team that tends to play with one number nine so minutes were limited.

"Gustav still gave everything to the group. He supported Harry at all times and made some big impacts himself off the substitutes’ bench. I’m sure part of Gustav’s thinking was being able to play more so he didn’t experience the dream he probably had when moving here, but he received an attractive offer and I’m delighted for him.

"I was in a fantastic meeting with the chairman and Barry Fry yesterday. Their record of recruitment at this club surely can’t be questioned. They showed a level of detail about players they have been looking at for a long time. They are enthusiastic about players and the ones they talked about were very exciting.

"We are targeting players outside the club, but there is no way those already here are being treated as second-class citizens. If Pemi was at a different club, and I’d seen what I have seen here, I would be extremely interested in signing him.

“I’ve only seen him twice in matches, but it feels like we have already signed a new player. The decision we have to make is whether or not this player needs more time to develop, but the plans are very fluid. They have to be as we felt we had two good ones in Gustav and Harry and that situation has now changed.

"We also have players scoring regularly at Under 21 and Under 18 level and some who have had good loan spells.

"We have lost some so the group has become a lot easier to manage as far as training schedules go.”
