Glowing tribute to new Peterborough United signing from former Sunderland team-mate

New Peterborough United signing Harrison Jones has left Sunderland with a glowing tribute from Black Cats stalwart Luke O’Nien.

The 21 year-old midfielder has been around the Sunderland first team squad for the last two seasons after making his first-team debut as a teenager in a Carabao Cup tie at Preston in August 2024.

Jones went on to make seven first-team appearances including two Championship starts and one start in both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

Jones signed a three-year contract at Posh on Thursday after an undisclosed fee was agreed with Sunderland.

“Harrison is incredible, and there are parts the public won’t have seen” O’Nien told the Sunderland Echo. “In the last two years he's been one of the most consistent trainers in the first team every single day. When you don't play, the culture goes to those sorts of people.

“The parts about Harrison Jones that no one will see, that fella's obviously incredible,” O’Nien said. “In the last two years he's been one of the most consistent trainers in the first team every single day, even when he hasn’t been playing.

"He'll never get the plaudits at this football club, but I know inside how important he was to this club and the levels he has set. All the boys know it. I can't wait to see his career kick on. He's an unbelievable player, incredible. He's been one of proudest things for me to see at Sunderland. Qualifying for Europe is cool, but seeing ‘Jonesy’, the way he's just matured over the last two, three, four years, the person he's become, plus the footballer, that means more.”

Jones spoke publicly for the first time following his move to the Posh Plus service. He said: “Luke was my best mate at Sunderland and I just hope I can transfer some of what he’s taught me to Peterborough. Sunderland are my hometown team and I’ve supported them all my life, but it’s time to think of myself now.

"It’s time to kick-start my career and Peterborough will give me that platform as they are a big club with big ambitions. I can play in multiple midfield positions and I’m sure if I just be myself I will fit right in.”

Jones was born on Christmas Day, 2004. He has seven siblings.
