Peterborough 70s nightclub reunion - and the return of the 'slowies section'

Once the staple of any nightclub evening back in the day, The ‘Slowies Section’ or the ‘Smooch Session’ will be making a return at the latest 50th Anniversary night for Peterborough’s first ever nightclub Anabelles on November 14.

For one night only, The Met Lounge reverts to its original name from the mid-70s, Anabelles, from 8pm until midnight, the clientele changes to an age range 50+ people coming out to relive their youth one more time with a playlist complied and played by original Anabelles DJs tom Bryan and Dave King. The records played will be from the period 1975 up to 1983 – the eight years the original club operated before changing to Canters, so expect plenty of Tamla Motown / Disco and classics from the New Romantic Era!

And, by request, the night will see the return of the ‘essential’ 15-minute end of evening ‘smooch session’ where back in the day dreams could be realised or shattered depending on the answer received when uttering the words ‘ would you like to dance?’..

Club owner Steve Jason said: “I’ve actually received messages and telephone calls from people who attended the 1st anniversary last year who loved the night but didn’t think we played enough ‘slowies’ at the end – and the majority of the calls were from ladies asking if we could ensure there was the return of the ‘smooch session’!.

“Maybe romance is still alive for the 50+ audience?

“Now as a person who was on the receiving end of plenty of ‘No thank yous’ back in the day I was quite surprised by the requests but as we are recreating a ‘true’ nightclub night from the period 1975-1983 then I guess it has to finish with a slowies session

“I’ve asked DJs Tom and Dave to dig into their record collections ( all vinyl) to find half a dozen or so classic ‘slowies’ from the era but if anyone who is coming has any suggestions then our ears are open.”

There will of course be a dress code from the era in place – ie no jeans or trainers allowed for either males or females – and the minimum age for entry is 50.

As was tradition back in the original days, ladies will be treated to a free glass of bubbly if they arrive before 9pm. The event is raising money for charity and advance tickets priced at £10 are selling fast. They can be booked from skiddle.com. The night runs from 8pm until 12 midnight.
