He’s the 21st player in the last 23 years to score on his Posh debut so a perfect time to look back and find out what happened to others who started their careers at London Road with a goalscoring bang.
Some turned into damp squibs, but others went on to enjoy excellent careers at Posh and elsewhere.
17. WAYNE PURSER
Forward Purser moved to Posh from non-league Hornchurch on a free transfer in November, 2004 and scored (pictured) 11 minutes into his debut, a 2-1 Division Two defeat at Walsall. He scored six goals in 26 Posh appearances before finishing his career at Cambridge United.
18. ADAM NEWTON
Newton (pictured) joined Posh as a right winger on a free transfer from Orient in the summer of 2002. He made his debut for Posh in a 3-2 Division Two win at Luton Town, scoring after 30 minutes. He went on to be a great Posh servant making 237 appearances, mostly as a right back, and scoring 9 goals. Went on to play for Brentford, Luton and Woking before retiring.
19. GUY WHITTINGHAM
Whittingham was a lower division goalscoring machine when he joined Posh on loan from Portsmouth in August, 2000. His debut was as a substitute in a Division Two game at Oldham and he scored the final goal in a 4-1 win. He only started one Posh match (6 appearanes in total) and didn't score again before returning to Portsmouth where he finished his career. He's pictured playing for Pompey.
20. WAYNE ANDREWS
There has been no more spectacular debut for Posh than the one enjoyed by striker Andrews. He pitched up at Posh on loan from Watford in February, 1999 and scored four goals in his first game, a 5-2 Division Three win over Barnet at London Road. He is pictured scoring one of his goals. Andrews only scored one further Posh goal in a 10-game stay before he returned to Watford. He went on to play for Crystal Palace, Coventry, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United among other before retiring.
