Peterborough United Women win ugly to complete a hat-trick of National League successes

Peterborough United Women’s boss Jake Poole admits his team found a different way to win as they completed a hat-trick of National League successes at Hull City on Sunday.

Posh were far from their best in an attacking sense, but they defended with great resilience and determination, especially after Evie Driscoll-King had headed the only goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half from a set piece.

A third win in a row lifted Posh up to seventh with 12 points from eight matches. They have an FA Women’s Cup first round game at lower level Lye Town next Sunday (October 25) before returning to Northern Premier League action at home to Norwich City on Wednesday, October 28.

"If you’d have told me four, five weeks ago we’d win three games in a row at this level I’d have said that was ambitious,” Poole said. “But i couldn’t be any prouder of the players for what they have achieved. We’ve had two tough away games and one at home and won them all.

"We were far from our fluent best in this game against a team who are very rigid and well organised, but we were very good defensively and I can’t remember Neive Corry having to make many saves.

"We changed our shape and it came with a real mentality shift. We are winning our duels and protecting our penalty area very well. We found a different way to win today, an uglier way.

"We’ve maybe exceeded our expectations so far. We aimed for 15 points before Christmas and we are almost there, but we can’t stop now. We will see where we are and then set new goals for the second half of the season.”

Poole has coaxed defender Kayleigh Hines out of retirement and she came on late to help secure a clean sheet, the second in a row away from home.
