The impact sub who helped create Peterborough United's point-saving goal is ready to shine more regularly

Teenage winger Vernon Masara is ready to make an impact with Peterborough United.

The 19 year-old summer signing from Burnley was frustrated to pick up a knee injury on his sole first-team start for his new club, the 5-1 win at Watford in the Carabao Cup.

Masara has made just for substitute appearances in League One so far, but his latest one was a successful one as he helped to create Matt Garbett’s last-gasp equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Burton Albion at London Road yesterday with a wicked cross.

Masara’s confidence was already high after making his first appearances for Zimbabwe Under 23s during the recent international break.

“Representing my country for the first time was a proud experience,” Masara told the Posh Plus service. “It was totally different to anything else I’d experienced, but it set me up for nicely for coming back to my club.

"It was frustrating to pick up the injury, but as soon as it happened I knew it was bad. I tried to run through it, but I couldn’t. The staff and physio were great with me though so I’m ready to make an impact now.

"I don’t see sitting on the bench as a bad thing. It’s an 18-man game these days and I know there is always a chance I could get on and make something happen.

"The gaffer sent me on and just told me to get at my man. I’d noticed they were vulnerable when wingers were cutting inside so that’s what I did in the last minute and I trusted my teammates to get on the end of it and they did. Credit to the whole team for coming back after conceding such a late goal ourselves. We have built a good team spirit here and it showed.

"We always fancied one more chance would come our way and thankfully it did and we took it.

"We have a lot of wingers here, but we are all different and we are all capable of taking on tiring defenders.”
