Peterborough United Women struck down by Lightning late in the game at PIMS Park

Two more goals for ace striker Ellie May couldn’t save Peterborough United Women from an undeserved 3-2 National League defeat at the hands of Loughborough Lightning at PIMS Park on Saturday.

The visitors won the Northern Premier Division contest with a 92nd minute winner after May had twice dragged Posh back on level terms. It was a cruel ending after a dominant second-half display from the home side who created the better chances throughout the game.

Posh did move off the bottom of the table despite the defeat with Hull City replacing them on goal difference after a 3-0 loss at Stoke City.

Four sides, including Posh, are on three points and one of them, Derby County, visit PIMS Park next Sunday (September 20, 2pm kick off).

May and Poppie Brown had come close to scoring before Ella West opened the scoring for Lightning with a 20-yarder into the bottom corner.

But Posh responded strongly with Rebecca Mears and May both delivering impressive efforts on goal with the latter's cheeky chip landing on the roof of the net.

Lauren Wilshaw fired wide of the target before May levelled the scores with a powerful shot from inside the area. Brown then fired over after good work from Wilshaw before Keir Perkins shot wide from an acute angle after charging into the penalty area.

On 50 minutes Camille Jenkins conceded a penalty and Lucy Mutch put the visitors back in front.

But on 76 minutes, May equalised with a cross that sailed over the keeper and into the top corner.

Crista Ganado and Brown went close to finding a winner for Posh, but instead Mutch claimed her second goal from an acute angle after goalkeeper Neive Corry had done well to parry a low drive from distance.

Posh: Corry, Connor (sub Reynolds, 54 mins), Jenkins, Pitt, Osker, Driscoll, Mears, Brown, Perkins (sub Ganado, 72 mins), Wilshaw (sub Rai, 80mins), May. Unused subs: Saunders, Andersen.
