It got even worse in a League Cup group game on Sunday as Rugby ran out 7-0 winners.

It really was a lesson in ruthlessness as the home side had nine shots on target in the entire match, while Posh failed to convert any of several decent opportunities.

Posh made changes to their regular first-choice starting line-up and then lost key defender Evie Driscoll-King to injury in the 12th minute.

Rugby scored three times before the break, but Posh enjoyed a strong start to the second-half before conceding the softest of penalties in the 64th minute. That was converted and the hosts ran in three more goals before the final whistle.

Crista Ganado twice went close to scoring for Posh as did substitute Kira Rai.

Posh will still qualify from the group by winning their final match against Leicester Foxes Under 23s later this month.

Posh dished out a beating of their own in their other group game, 6-0 against Notts County.

Posh, who are bottom of a congested Northern Premier Division, host Loughborough Lightning in a league game at PIMS Park next Sunday (September 13,, 2pm). Both teams have three points from their first three matches.

This match had been switched to the Weston Homes Stadium, but it’s been moved back to the normal home venue to protect the London Road playing surface.

Posh: Corry, Jenkins, Connor, Driscoll-King (sub, Mears 12 mins), Osker, Driscoll (sub, Saunders 70 mins), Brown (sub, Rai 46 mins), Reynolds, Wilshaw (sub, Cragg 88 mins), May, Ganado (sub, Andersen 70 mins).
