Whether that proves to be the case or not is yet to be seen but with that in mind, the Peterborough Telegraph has evaluated the club’s current squad to provide a position-by-position breakdown of the options and how well set the club are to earn an immediate return to the Championship.
5. Left wing back- Harrison Burrows, Dan Butler, Joe Tomlinson
Emergency- Aaron Powell.
COVERED? Yes. In League One, Burrows, Butler and Tomlinson are all capable wing backs but playing Burrows there would be a waste. He may fare better a level down as he is less likely to be exposed on his defensive weaknesses but he has talents that should be better used up the pitch. Photo: Joe Dent
6. Right wing back- Joe Ward, Nathan Thompson
Emergency- Ben Mensah, Sammie Szmodics, Ryan Broom
COVERED?: Slightly more so than right back given that Joe Ward has shown a real aptitude for the position. His improvement at the end of last season suggests that he is comfortably good enough for this level. Thompson is also a good option to have to play there. Photo: Joe Dent
7. Centre midfield- Jack Taylor, Jeando Fuchs, Ben Thompson, Hector Kyprianou, Oliver Norburn
Emergency- Joel Randall, Sammie Szmodics, Josh Knight, Harrison Burrows, Jorge Grant. COVERED?: and some! Posh will go into the season with perhaps one of the best pool of midfielders in the division. The addition Thompson will hopefully add some vision and creativity to go with hard word and tough-tackling Taylor and Fuchs. Taylor has an eye for a pas as well let's not forget. Kyprianou looks like a good young option and Posh have plenty of players that can fill the position. Photo: Joe Dent
8. CAM- Sammie Szmodics, Joel Randall, Jack Taylor, Kwame Poku
Emergency- Ben Thompson, Jorge Grant, Ryan Broom COVERED?: Yes. Sammie Szmodics has proven his class at this level before and I think Kwame Poku could have a big second season at Posh, especially considering what he has able to show in bursts last season.
Joel Randall is an option if he stays injury fee and we need to move past the fee paid and see what he can do. I'm not ready to throw his away yet but I have always been a big advocate of Jack Taylor playing further forward in the midfield, I think it allows him to showcase more of his game. Photo: Joe Dent
