Peterborough United boss will not panic if no new signings are made before season opener at Bristol Rovers

Peterborough United boss Luke Williams has said he will not panic if no new additions are made to his squad ahead of the 2026-27 season opener at Bristol Rovers in the Carabao Cup next Saturday (August 8).

The Posh boss has confirmed the club are hard at work to bring in new players, but he also has full faith in the current group to be able to compete at League One level.

After the 2-0 friendly defeat to West Brom at the Weston Homes Stadium today, the PT asked the Posh boss how close the current group at the club was to how he would like his squad to look when the transfer window closes.

He said: “It’s hard to answer that, I don’t know.

“It depends on the quality of the players that come in. If there are players of enough quality to take the team to a much higher level, fantastic. If we’re bringing in bodies just the same then the squad is not going to look hugely different on the pitch. If we bring in players of a really high level, then there will be a much different appearance on the pitch.”

When further asked if there was a number of signings he had in mind, he added: “No, we’ll see.”

It looks like MK Dons midfielder Liam Kelly won’t be among the additions after his current boss discussed a Posh bid for the 30 year-old here

Posh could still add trialist winger Wanya Marcal, who has now appeared in four first team friendlies, to their ranks. He came on in the 55th minute to replace Owura Edwards and played on the left wing. He had little opportunity to impress with Posh largely playing without the ball.

When asked if the club were closer to making a decision on the winger, Williams said: “I think so, there’s talent and pace there. We've had a discussion and we’re not quite in agreement about everything at the moment, but potentially we could see him join us.”

He confirmed agreeing personal terms and the potential signing of other players were ‘relevant factors’ in the deliberations.

In terms of potential new recruits, Williams said: “There is still so much going on. I had a really good chat with Darragh MacAnthony and Barry Fry today. There is so much going on I will be surprised if there aren’t more players brought into the club and of good quality as well.

"I imagine people get anxious every season. We are all anxious because we know what’s at stake and we are excited to get started at the same time. I have to show confidence in the group we have here and have trust more players will arrive to help us reach the correct quality.

"I am sure we can compete (at League One level with the current players) absolutely. I’m really enjoying working with them and have full confidence in them. If nothing happens between now and Bristol, I won’t be panicking in any way shape of form. The guys are in a really good place.”
