Peterborough United boss 'happy' with the performance but 'devastated' with the result as his side suffer Sheffield Wednesday defeat

Peterborough United boss Luke Williams was pleased with large parts of his side’s performance against Sheffield Wednesday but he was left devastated by the result.

Despite creating a large number of chances and denying the same to Sheffield Wednesday, Posh still fell to a 2-1 League One defeat at London Road on Saturday.

Wednesday won the game with an own goal and a set-piece goal either side of a Ben Wood equaliser.

Williams felt his side created enough chances to win the match and was left frustrated at the nature of goals they conceded.

Posh have now taken four points from their first five league games.

Williams said: “I was happy with the performance, but devastated by the result. We didn’t look like a lesser team than Sheffield Wednesday and they are top. I imagine they will be one of the top five in the division, but we created a lot of chances today, certainly more than our opponent.

“We controlled more of the ball and limited them to fewer chances. There was a lot of things I was happy about, but then a lapse of concentration led to the first goal and then a routine corner kick - where everyone is in position - leads to the second goal.

“We haven’t managed to finish the actions with correct contacts and we suffered again.

“We equalised from a brilliant ball from James Dornelly and it was great to see Ben Woods arriving in the box again.

“The goals we conceded were a frustration because we played well enough to win the game.

“We have to be more clinical in both boxes. In the flow of the game in between the boxes, we are able to use the middle of the pitch to create chances and deny the opposition more chances than we create. We have to be more clinical in one box and more ruthless in the other.”

Williams told the media he was unable to offer an update on Tom O’Connor so soon after the match ,but the defender is believed carrying a groin injury, separate from the hamstring issue that kept him out between January and August.

On the other players who missed out Williams added: “Owura just didn’t quite make it today. I don’t think it is anything we should be so concerned about it. We have had a chance to look at it and there is nothing in there that is a huge problem.

"I think of Owura, Carl Johnston and Vernon Masara, and two of those guys should be available for the next game."

Posh travel to Milton Keynes next Saturday (September 12, 3pm) looking for their first away points of the season.
