A real mixed bag for Posh against Hull. They came from behind on the road last season and fancied their chances of making it a double but Ethan Hamilton’s first-half red card put pay to a bright start. This fixture also saw Posh snap a 7-match losing run in 2012 thanks to an Emile Sinclair hat-trick, perhaps his career highlight.

Both sides actually have identical form over the past five games, Hull’s win at home to Middlesbrough was their first win in 11 matches since the opening day of the season, when they stuffed Preston 4-1 at Deepdale. McCann caused a stir among the fanbase last time out by moving away from a back three to a 4-2-3-1 and dropping the highly-favoured Josh Emmanuel in defence for ex-Posh man Callum Elder.

This is a big game. There is no question, it’s master vs apprentice in Ferguson against McCann but it is so much more than that.

Posh almost have to win if they are to restore confidence that they have what it takes at this level. Hull may have gone up as champions but a transfer limit/embargo imposed by the EFL has severely hampered their chances to add to the squad, meanwhile Posh have been free to add as they see fit.

Yet, Posh sit a point behind a Hull side, who are in 21st, that have picked up just nine points, scoring 8 goals in the process and have failed to score in 8 of their 12 league games. Posh may have scored 12 goals but the top scorers for both sides have just two each, Burrows, Dembrele, Szmodics and JCH for Posh and Keane Lewis-Potter for Hull.

The Tigers have picked up just five points in six home matches and Posh’s away struggles are well-documented. This represents a real chance for both sides to get their seasons started, if they can find a bit of quality, that has so far been lacking.

Tonight’s referee will be Leigh Doughty. He has had a rapid rise, he was refereeing in the National League in 18/19 season and only spent a year in the Football League before being promoted to the Championship last season. Tonight is his first time taking charge of Posh, let’s hope for a better standard of ref than on Saturday.
