Ivan Toney joins a select group of former Peterborough United players to play in the World Cup Finals

Former Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney started a World Cup Finals match for the first time as England beat France in a madcap match to decide who finished third.

England won 6-4 after starting Toney in place of Harry Kane up front. The former Posh man didn’t score, but proved a handful for a desperate French defence until he was substituted 11 minutes from time in Miami.

Toney had made his Finals debut in the final stages of the stormy 2-1 semi-final defeat at the hands of Argentina last Wednesday, also in MIami. The 30 year-old’s selection for the England squad had been a shock as he hadn’t been used in the World Cup qualifying matches and now plys his trade in the low-quality Saudi Pro League.

Toney now joins David Seaman (England), Colin Clarke (Northern Ireland), Danny Rose (England), Gary Breen (Ireland) and Jimmy Rooney (Australia) as former Posh players to play in a World Cup Finals match.
