But who was the player you’d bet your house on scoring from a one-on-one opportunity, or any scoring chance which would have a high XG (expected goal) in today’s parlance?
Here we celebrate the best Posh finishers, not necessarily those with the most goals.
It’s a personal choice covering players I’ve seen in action for Posh, so basically since the 1973-74 season with apologies to the superstar strikers from before then like Terry Bly, Dennis Emery, Derek Dougan and Peter Price.
My top 20 is here in reverse order leading to my number one pick. It was incredibly tough to rank so many top players.
I’ve also asked fans on X to nominate their top finisher. At the time of posting this article I had 23 different nominations, the most-voted for players will be revealed on this site on Friday.
To cast a vote post to @PTAlanSwann.

9. 12th - LEON MCKENZIE
A striker signed from Crystal Palace was the best player in a poor Posh side. Averaged exactly a goal every two games (59-118) in two spells between 1998-2004 which was impressive in the circumstances. Photo: Adam Fairbrother

10. 11th - MICK GOODING
The story behind his departure after one season at Posh means this midfielder is not fondly remembered by all Posh fans, but he was a terrific midfielder with an eye for goal. He got 18 of them in one Division Four season in 1987-88 before leaving for Wolves. Photo: David Lowndes

11. 10th - KEN CHARLERY
The decision of Chris Turner to turn a lanky, clumsy winger into a centre-forward was an inspired one. 'King Ken' was the main man in the unforgettable 1991-92 promotion season, scoring twice at Wembley in a Third Division play-off final. The winning goal was a masterful finish, one of many he delivered for the club. Photo: David Lowndes

12. 9th - BRITT ASSOMBALONGA
One 33-goal season of brilliance from this striker. He certainly didn't miss much. Photo: Joe Dent
