But who was the player you’d bet your house on scoring from a one-on-one opportunity, or any scoring chance which would have a high XG (expected goal) in today’s parlance?
Here we celebrate the best Posh finishers, not necessarily those with the most goals.
It’s a personal choice covering players I’ve seen in action for Posh, so basically since the 1973-74 season with apologies to the superstar strikers from before then like Terry Bly, Dennis Emery, Derek Dougan and Peter Price.
My top 20 is here in reverse order leading to my number one pick. It was incredibly tough to rank so many top players.
I’ve also asked fans on X to nominate their top finisher. At the time of posting this article I had 23 different nominations, the most-voted for players will be revealed on this site on Friday.
To cast a vote post to @PTAlanSwann.

13. 8th - GEORGE BOYD
The scorer of that goal at the start of his feature when he netted from close to the halfway line against Huddersfield in a Championship fixture. Boyd didn't get the chances other members of the fabled 'Holy Trinity' but he was arguably as deadly, On his left foot from inside, or from the edge of, the opposition penalty area he was clinical. 14. 7th - IVAN TONEY
He took a little while to warm up at Posh, but Darren Ferguson unleashed the beast in a player who was soon in the Premier League and the England squad. Photo: Joe Dent

15. 6th - JONSON CLARKE-HARRIS
There are better footballers below this centre-forward in my list, but for two League One seasons he was a consistent scorer of goals, winning two Golden Boots. Photo: David Lowndes

16. 5th - JIMMY QUINN
He was 37 when he joined Posh in the 1997-98 season and yet by the end of January he had 20 goals. He faded, but he delivered a master-class in shooting accuracy during a deadly partnership with Martin Carruthers. Photo: David Lowndes
