But who was the player you’d bet your house on scoring from a one-on-one opportunity, or any scoring chance which would have a high XG (expected goal) in today’s parlance?
Here we celebrate the best Posh finishers, not necessarily those with the most goals.
It’s a personal choice covering players I’ve seen in action for Posh, so basically since the 1973-74 season with apologies to the superstar strikers from before then like Terry Bly, Dennis Emery, Derek Dougan and Peter Price.
My top 20 is here in reverse order leading to my number one pick. It was incredibly tough to rank so many top players.
I’ve also asked fans on X to nominate their top finisher. At the time of posting this article I had 23 different nominations, the most-voted for players will be revealed on this site on Friday.
To cast a vote post to @PTAlanSwann.

5. 16th - ANDY CLARKE
Scored the winning goal in a Wembley play-off final in May, 2000 (above) and top scorer for Posh in three separate League One seasons. His pace created plenty of chances and he took a decent proportion of them. Photo: David Lowndes

6. 15th - CONOR WASHINGTON
For half a season under Graham Westley's management this striker was lethal, too lethal as he ended up moving to QPR that January thus scuppering a promotion push and a Posh manager's career. He still finished Posh top scorer that season when he scored all sorts of goals. Photo: Joe Dent

7. 14th - BILLY KELLOCK
MIdfield players can be great finishers as well and Kellock was among the best of them in Posh history. He could blast them in from range or make well-timed runs into the penalty area. He scored 48 goals in 156 Posh appearances between 1979-82, a decent return for a midfield man. Photo: David Lowndes

8. 13th - CRAIG MACKAIL-SMITH
One of the few to have scored more than 100 Posh goals, but when he first pitched up at London Road his finishing was erratic. It's fair to say he improved. Photo: PT
