But who was the player you’d bet your house on scoring from a one-on-one opportunity, or any scoring chance which would have a high XG (expected goal) in today’s parlance?
Here we celebrate the best Posh finishers, not necessarily those with the most goals.
It’s a personal choice covering players I’ve seen in action for Posh, so basically since the 1973-74 season with apologies to the superstar strikers from before then like Terry Bly, Dennis Emery, Derek Dougan and Peter Price.
My top 20 is here in reverse order leading to my number one pick. It was incredibly tough to rank so many top players.
I’ve also asked fans on X to nominate their top finisher. At the time of posting this article I had 23 different nominations, the most-voted for players will be revealed on this site on Friday.
To cast a vote post to @PTAlanSwann.

17. 4th - AARON MCLEAN
There was usually only one outcome when this smiling assassin was bearing down on goal during his first spell at Posh. He struck the ball powerfully and accurately into the corners of the opposition goal. He'd be the first to admit he was blessed to play alongside Mackail-Smith and Boyd. Photo: s

18. 3rd - JACK MARRIOTT
Another to enjoy one 33-goal season with Posh and this striker's finishing was world class at times. His specialty was the lob over an advancing goalkeeper, but he was reliable when any sort of chance presented itself. His speed and workrate were other impressive factors. Photo: David Lowndes

19. 2 - DWIGHT GAYLE
He only played half a season, and scored just 13 goals for Posh, but he made such an impression at Championship level he will feature in any list of top strikers to have graced London Road. Good off either foot and blessed with great movement and superb instincts. Chances were relatively few and far between in the second tier for Posh, but he was deadly when they arrived. 20. 1st - ROBBIE COOKE
A striker who was released twice by Mansfield took his second chance in the Football League in style with Posh. Peter Morris was the manager who signed Cooke from Grantham Town in time for the 1980-81 Division Four season and he scored in his first four games. He finished with 68 goals in 137 appearances for the club, many of them after one-on-one meetings with the opposition 'keeper. Cooke was cool and deadly in front of goal and no-one was better for longer at Posh in my humble opinion! Photo: David Lowndes
