Corry excels, May scores again, but Peterborough United are beaten at West Bromwich Albion

In-form Ellie May scored again and goalkeeper Neive Corry delivered an outstanding display, but Peterborough United Women went down 3-1 at West Bromwich Albion in a National Premier Division North game on Sunday.

May headed a 37th minute equaliser to make it four goals in her last three games, but two goals at the start of the second-half effectively delivered a first win of the season for the hosts. Posh defender Anna Pitt was sent off after picking up a second yellow card 15 minutes from time to make a late comeback impossible.

Corry was in superb form in the first-half to keep Posh in touch. She saved well from Rhianne Oakley (twice), Phoebe Hollin and Riya Mannu before she was beaten by a fierce Hollin strike on 30 minutes.

Posh responded well with Niamh Reynolds and Jess Driscoll testing the home ‘keeper before May nodded home a cross from Evie Driscoll-King.

But Mannu and Rhianne Rush scored in the opening 10 minutes of the second-half to leave Posh playing catch-up.

Substitute Lauren Wilshaw came closest to pulling a goal back, but Pitt’s dismissal ended all hope and Corry had to save well twice to keep the Baggies down to three goals.

The defeat dropped Posh to the bottom of the table, but the bottoms seven teams all have three points.

Posh have a League Cup tie at leaders Rugby Borough next Sunday (September 6).

Posh: Corry, Jenkins, Pitt, Osker, Driscoll-King, Mears (sub Connor, 74 mins), Reynolds (sub Brown, 54 mins) Driscoll (sub Saunders, 85 mins), Perkins, May, Ganado (sub Wilshaw, 54 mins). Unused subs: Rai, Andersen.
