There are few better ways to warm the cockles on a cold and miserable autumn day than a slap-up roast dinner.
The traditional roast dinner has been a firm favourite on these shores for centuries, and there’s no doubt that it tastes even better at this time of year.
A plate full of succulent meat, crispy potatoes and thick gravy is enough to raise spirits on even the most miserable of days.

As the nation’s second-favourite dish (just behind fish and chips), it’s little wonder that there are pubs and restaurants in literally every corner of the country where you can tuck into a tasty roast dinner.
But without bragging, here in Peterborough we really do have some top-class places for a roast.
Earlier this week we asked our readers to nominate where, in their opinion, is the best place to go for a roast dinner in and around Peterborough.
Having received north of 200 suggestions, it’s fair to say that this debate caused a bit of a stir!
Below we’ve taken a closer look at eight of the most popular reader suggestions.

1. Slattery's at The Duck and Drake - 34 Main Street, Yaxley
Slattery's at The Duck and Drake was nominated by many readers. Headed up by chef Dan Slattery, Slattery's has been the new food option at Yaxley's Duck & Drake pub since September following the departure of Taste of Thai. The roast dinners, which are all gluten free, are served each Sunday from 12pm - 4.30pm. Photo: Slattery's at The Duck and Drake

2. The Blue Bell Glinton - 10 High Street, Glinton
Peterborians turned out in force to sing the praises of The Blue Bell in Glinton, with one going as far as to describe the pub's roast potatoes as being "to die for". Available between 12pm and 4pm each Sunday, The Blue Bell's roast dinners start from £17.95. Photo: Google

3. The Farmers - 200 Broadway, Yaxley
Dozens of readers put The Farmers in Yaxley forward as being one of the best places in and around the city for a tasty roast. The Farmers offers a carvery, rather than a plated roast, meaning diners can pile their plates as high as they like. Photo: Google

4. The Dog & Castle - The Green, Woodwalton
The brilliantly-named Dog & Castle in Woodwalton won over readers with its high quality cuts of meat and gourmet gravy options. Described by one reader as "home cooking at its finest", the Dog & Castle's Sunday roasts seem to go down a storm. Photo: Google
