A successful Peterborough United loanee centre-back is available again

Tom O’Connor, who enjoyed a decent loan spell at Peterborough United last season, could be available from Wrexham again.

O’Connor (27) has a year left on his Wrexham contract. He has not officially been made available for transfer, but his manager Phil Parkinson has hinted he could let the centre-back leave on loan.

Posh are seeking an experienced centre-back to replace Tom Lees, especially as 29 year-old Sam Hughes didn’t play a single game last season because of injury.

O’Connor did well at Posh last season after arriving on September 1. He made 19 appearances in all competitions and forged a fine partnership with Lees. He picked up a season-ending hamstring injury in a January home defeat at the hands of Plymouth and returned to North Wales.

O’Connor is unlikely to be used by Wrexham in the Championship so a departure can reasonably be expected. Parkinson has said enquiries have already been received for players who were out on loan last season. The other loanees included Paul Mullin, Conor Coady, Mo Faal, Ryan Hardie and Elliot Lee.

Parkinson told the North Wales Chronicle: "We have already had calls about several of the lads who have been out on loan. As staff, we need to sit down and go through it and we will make any further announcements as we go along."

Other available centre-backs who would suit what Posh need include recently released Aberdeen defender Tom McIntyre and highly-rated Falkirk player Liam Henderson.

But the chances of either moving to London Road would be regarded as slim. McIntyre (27), who has suffered an injury-plagued couple of seasons, has been monitored by his former club Reading, while Henderson would cost a fee and, according to the Daily Record, he’s being pursued by Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United.
