Debenhams is reopening 97 stores in closing down sale - here's how to get discounts

Shoppers have the opportunity to grab some final bargains from Debenhams as the department store hosts its final closing down sale.

The retailer is set to reopen 97 of its high street stores across England and Wales from Monday 12 April to clear stock before they close their doors for good in May.

It follows the 242-year-old company’s collapse last year.

So, why is there a closing down sale - and what discounts will there be?

Here is everything you need to know.

Why is there a Debenhams closing down sale?

Debenhams fell into administration last year while the Covid lockdown prevented Brits from shopping in-store.

The pandemic was said to be the final nail in the coffin for the retailer, as it had previously been struggling due to the rise in online shopping and the emergence of fast-fashion brands.

Its brand name was bought by online fashion giant Boohoo for £55million in January, with plans to relaunch the Debenhams website by the end of May.

The stores in England and Wales will start to close to the public on 2 May, and the process will be complete in 13 days.

The final sale is similar to the retailer’s online “fire sale” which launched in December 2020 with up to 70 per cent off a range of products.

An unprecedented number of people visiting the Debenhams site led to the retailer setting up an online queuing system to control the numbers.

What are the Debenhams discounts?

Debenhams said it would be offering large in-store discounts as part of its final closing down sale.

There will be up to 70 per cent off fashion and homeware, while beauty and fragrance products will have up to 50 per cent off.

Debenhams said: “This is the last chance for customers in England and Wales to visit their local Debenhams before sadly our stores close for good.

“We will be reopening with a fantastic range of offers and discounts across all of our customers’ favourite brands and products.”

But shoppers will have to be quick, as stocks are limited and expected to sell out rapidly, the company said.

Prices are expected to be slashed across most of Debenhams’ stock, with a wide variety of brand discounts.

Its most renowned beauty brands include Chanel, Dior, Bobbi Brown, Elizabeth Arden and Clarins.

For clothing, Phase Eight, Jasper Conran, Jenny Packham and Ted Baker are particularly popular, as well as Topshop and Dorothy Perkins.
