Police were even forced to intervene on Wednesday - the day the drive-thrus re-opened - due to the mad rush to get to the restaurant in Boongate.

At the time, police told the Peterborough Telegraph: “Officers attended the McDonald’s in Padholme Road East to assist with the flow of traffic in the area. The road was not closed and officers assisted while McDonald’s staff reassessed their drive-thru policy to deal with demand.”

It said it may be forced to close some of the outlets if it felt people were being put at risk.

The Peterborough Telegraph has contacted Cambridgeshire police to ask if it has been called to assist with traffic flow.
