Queensgate roundabout works continuing apace
Latest photos show City Link improvements taking shape at key city centre interchange
New photos taken of the Queensgate roundabout show the new ‘City Link’ layout beginning to take shape. Clearly visible from the roadside and the overlooking car parks, the roundabout shows a considerable amount of concrete has been poured to fill in the space occupied by the former subways. The recent photos also show a gentle incline developing within the roundabout, a factor which will help create the rising pathway needed to ease people exiting the railway station from subway level to street level as they prepare to enter Cowgate and the city centre.
The level of progress is notable considering the number of times work has been interrupted by the discovery of human remains on-site. At last count, a total of 37 skeletons had been found beneath the roundabout, which was once the site of a city burial ground. Recent discoveries have also included tombs and burial chambers.

The works are part of a £5 million overhaul which will see two of the roundabout’s three subways filled in and replaced with a pedestrian crossing into Cowgate. This initiative – known as ‘City Link’ – will allow people and cyclists to make use of a realigned path on raised ground level to reach the city centre. The latest forecasts suggest the works will be finished by summer, 2027.
The transformation of the Queensgate roundabout is the first phase of the £65 million Station Quarter regeneration, which aims to turn Peterborough railway station into a double-sided gateway with a new western entrance, commercial space, and enhanced cycle and pedestrian links into the city centre.
