Queensgate Roundabout to be cut to one lane for a year from July 6 as works to fill subways with concrete take place

Motorists are warned that one of the busiest roundabouts in Peterborough will be cut to one lane for a year from today while a major project take place.

The Queensgate Roundabout is one of the heavily used by traffic but work on a £5 million transformation scheme starts today (July 6), which will see the ‘gateway to the city centre’ changed beyond recognition.

Two subways running through the roundabout will be filled with 1,000 tonnes of concrete with landscaping works following to create a more welcoming route from the train station to Cowgate and the city centre.

But it will take 40 weeks to complete and motorists and pedestrians are set to to face months of delays.

Most of the roundabout will be reduced to just one lane for the length of the works, which are due to be completed in summer 2027.

There will also be some full closures of Queensgate roundabout planned throughout the course of the project. These will be overnight to reduce disruption for motorists:

Overnight on Sunday, 5 July from 7pm to 6am.

Overnight closures in spring/summer 2027.

James Collingridge, Service Director for Infrastructure and Highways at Peterborough City Council, said: “From July we’ll be putting traffic management in place. Obviously it is pivotal that we protect the staff that are working in the centre of the roundabout, so to do that, there will be some disruption on the roundabout, but we are trying to work to keep that as minimal as possible.

"The scheme we are putting in place will allow the roundabout to continue to work as a roundabout.

"As you come in from the Asda side, you will still have the left hand lane to go up Thorpe Road, you will have the normal lane to go straight on. The third lane will be closed off, as that will be the safe area for the works to happen.

"As you come in from the other side, you will have the single lane to go straight on, but the inside lane will be closed off for the works.

"We are also opening the lanes to make them a bit wider to give vehicles a bit more space and access, to keep the flow of traffic.”

There will also be disruption for pedestrians and cyclists who normally use the underpass.

James said: “One option is to come out the station cross the crossing towards Queensgate.

"There will be a walking route with signage where the taxis come through from the Asda side.”

Walking and Cycling

Walking – The subway system will be closed from Monday, 6 July. Two diversion routes have been set up:

A route to the railway station around the roundabout from Thorpe Road, via the Priestgate entrance and across Bourges Boulevard.

A dedicated walk-through across the station car park to the station.

Cyclists can either use Queensgate roundabout, or dismount from their cycles and use the pedestrian diversion routes.

Parking

Peterborough Railway Station - From Monday 29 June, the capacity of the main station car park will be reduced by 111 spaces around the Priority Parking area. Please allow extra time for parking and consider using Mayor’s Walk or Spittle Bank car parks.

The short stay car park and drop off zone will remain open and taxis and vehicles will be able to continue to use the route around the car park and entrance and exit as normal.

Queensgate – All car parks will remain open.

Buses

There are expected to be short delays to bus times, however, Queensgate roundabout is still operational.
