Plans for more housing at former Wheatsheaf pub site in Peterborough

Plans for more housing at the site of a former pub have been put forward.

The Wheatsheaf pub on Eastfield Road in Peterborough was demolished last year to make way for supported living accommodation in the form of 12 one-bedroom apartments and four one-bedroom bungalows.

With work on these underway, a planning application for four new one-bedroom maisonettes on the same site — also to be supported living — was submitted to Peterborough City Council in October this year.

If approved, the semi-detached maisonettes would become part of the streetscape proposed in the already approved planning application.

A design and access statement written by Zebra Architects on behalf of Squirrel Wood Properties said: “The maisonettes will make use of the current planning applications foot paths, vehicle access, parking and green space.

“The proposed footpaths will join the neighbouring bungalows footpath and access from Eastfield Road.

“No additional parking is provided on the grounds that the 11 spaces provided on the approved application are already limited and proposed to operate on a booking system.”

The total area for the application site is 360m² and the immediate surrounding area was formerly the site for the two storey Wheatsheaf pub.

The original Wheatsheaf Inn was thatched and, in 1847, owned by Buckles Brewery.

It was then rebuilt in 1914 but closed at the end of 2019 before being demolished as part of the current planning application.

The developments on the site aim to provide accommodation for people with a range of disabilities and are designed for vulnerable adults who may need occasional support in their daily lives.
