The number of young people on jobless related benefits in Peterborough rose by eight per cent last month, according to new figures.
Data released by the Department of Wok ands Pensions shows that 1,025 people aged between 18 and 24 years old in Peterborough are currently claiming Universal Credit.
It is an increase of 80 people compared with the same month last year.
However, the figures also show that overall the number of people in Peterborough claiming Universal Credit fell by one per cent to 5,330 people, which means 65 people left the register last month.

Mari Saarelainen, recruitment consultant for the Jobcentre, said: “While youth claimant numbers for those aged 18 to 24 have increased by eight per cent over the past year, this highlights the importance of providing targeted support and interventions for young people.
"Initiatives such as the Youth Jobs Grant help employers recruit young people who may otherwise struggle to enter the labour market.
"Eligible employers can receive up to £3,000 per job outcome.”
Mari said that Peterborough Jobcentre is supporting young people through its Movement to Work programme, which provides valuable work experience opportunities, helps participants develop employability skills and gives them recent experience to strengthen their CVs.
She said: “We are particularly proud to be progressing a direct recruitment opportunity for a young person currently participating in a Movement to Work placement that began this week at Peterborough Jobcentre.”
"Our commitment to supporting young people was also demonstrated through our involvement in the recent Youth Employment Conference 2026 organized by Peterborough’s Cross Keys Homes, which welcomed more than 80 attendees.”
