New leader of Peterborough First political group vows to hold city council chiefs 'to account'
‘Unanimous’ backing for group’s new boss
There is a new hand on the helm of the second largest political group on Peterborough City Council.
Councillor Mohammed Farooq was unanimously elected as leader of Peterborough First by the group last night. (October 10).
He takes over from Cllr Chris Harper who resigned two weeks ago saying it was to prevent himself from being ‘spread too thinly’ with his other commitments.

Afterwards, Cllr Farooq said: “It’s exciting times for our group and I am honoured that my colleagues have unanimously supported me.
"Our group has a great spirit, and to reaffirm this, the leadership was handed over with a handshake and a hug, such is the warmth of our group.
"I am a leader of equals, as every one of our 14 councillors is there to serve their wards to the best of their abilities and ensure they bring their skills and expertise to the council chamber.
Cllr Farooq, who was the council leader for six months until the local elections in May, which produced a Labour-led local authority, said: “The council is in the toughest financial position we have ever seen, and for this reason our group will need to rise to the challenge.
"We will hold to account the administration and the council for the bad decisions and equally support and enable the good decisions.
He added: "During my time as council leader, I have built good relationships cross-politically and with the community champions of our city.
"I look forward to strengthening these relationships as the new group leader and ensuring that the public trust the actions of Peterborough First and extend their support for us at the next elections.”
Cllr Harper said: “It’s been a great privilege to serve as the group leader and navigate us through an incredible period.
"With the responsibility of being such a large group now comes extra responsibilities and time demands too.
"With my other Council duties which include being the Chair of the planning and environmental committee, plus with my ward and volunteering commitments, I decided it was time for a new leader.
He added: “Cllr Farooq has my full support, and I know from his time as leader of the Council he will serve the group and the city well.”
