Battery warning after Peterborough bin lorry catches fire

Residents are being warned not to put batteries in bins after another bin lorry caught fire in Peterborough.

Thankfully there were no injuries reported in the latest incident – but with Christmas round the corner, Peterborough City Council is warning people to dispose of batteries safely, to avoid more incidents.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Last week, another one of our bin lorries caught fire while travelling along Borthwick Park. Fortunately the crew are all ok and there was no damage to the vehicle, but it obviously caused a delay to the round. The fire was caused by batteries being incorrectly disposed of with other waste.

“There have been 4 bin lorry fires in Peterborough this year, 2 even on the same street!

“We’d like to remind residents that household batteries must be placed in a clear plastic bag and left on top of your bin lid—they should never go inside the bin. Batteries can also be recycled at the Household Recycling Centre: https://pulse.ly/bgkr27vdvk”
