Peterborough drunk driver sustains serious injuries after driving over roundabout and hitting lamppost

A drunk driver has sustained serious injuries after driving over a roundabout and hitting a lamppost in Peterborough.

The incident took place on the roundabout at the entrance to Cardea on the A605 at around 11pm last night (March 31).

The driver of a Volkswagen Golf, who failed a roadside breath test, is believed to have driven straight over the roundabout before crashing into a lamppost.

Two passers-by gave the man first aid at the roadside until Police arrived and he was taken to hospital, where he remains with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We were called at 11.23pm yesterday (31 March) with reports of a single-vehicle collision on the A605 near Cardea.

“A Volkswagen Golf had been driven over a roundabout and collided with a lamppost.

“Officers and paramedics attended the scene.

“The driver of the Volkswagen, a man in his 20s, failed a roadside breath test, but was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains. His injuries are described as serious, but are not thought to be life threatening.”
