Halloween nightmare for Peterborough rider as police seize illegal e-bike
There was a Halloween nightmare for one e-bike rider in Peterborough – after police spotted him riding the illegal vehicle.
While some e-bikes are legal to use, there are restrictions on them – and when police spotted one in Walton on Saturday (October 31), an investigation revealed it did not fit with current restrictions.
A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said ‘it was identified as illegal due to the bike reaching high speeds and the pedals were not required to make it move.’

“An electric bike:
“must have pedals that you can use to propel it
“can have more than two wheels, for example a tricycle
“must have an electric motor that can run continuously at a maximum power of no more than 250 watts
“must have no electrical assistance once you reach 15.5 miles per hour (mph)
“If your electric bike fails to meet any of these requirements it needs to be taxed and insured as either a motorcycle or a moped.”
The seizure was not the only action of the night for officers in the city.
Some of the incidents they were called to also included:
Fireworks being set off in Central Park, Orton Goldhay, and Eastgate
Children throwing eggs at passing cars in Fengate
A knife being seen at a party in Stanground
People throwing pumpkins and glass bottles in Sugar Way
Violence at a party in New England
Police also stop-searched a man in Broadway after they saw him acting suspiciously and potentially concealing something in his waistband. A tub of cannabis buds were found nearby and he will be voluntarily interviewed at a later date.
