Former Peterborough United striker Dwight Gayle scored a winning goal on his first appearance of the season for Newcastle United in the Premier League yesterday (December 12).

Substitute Gayle powered home a header 10 minutes from time to seal a 2-1 win for the Magpies over his former club West Brom at St James’ Park.

Ivan Toney is now clear at the top of the Championship scoring charts after bagging a 15th goal of the season in a 3-1 win at Nottinggam Forest.

Conor Washington claimed a sixth goal of the season with a fine finish as Charlton came from 2-1 down at the break to beat AFC Wimbledon 5-2 in League One. Charlton are now just a point and a place behind fifth-placed Posh, and have a game in hand.

Colin Daniel scored bottom club Burton Albion’s goal in a 1-1 League One draw at Russell Martin’s MK Dons. Dons, who host Posh on Tuesday, equalised from the penalty spot.

In League Two there was a goal from the penalty spot for Tom Nichols as Crawley beat Barrow 4-2 and a goal for Oldham skipper Carl Piergianni in a 3-1 win over Bradford City.
