NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Peterborough Sports lose perfect record, Stebbing strikes at last for Yaxley

It's all over. The last perfect winning record in English step five football and below was broken as Peterborough Sports crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Long Buckby in United Counties Division One yesterday (February 13).

Sports had won all 21 of their previous league matches before travelling to face a side who have now put together their own unbeaten run of eight matches. Buckby scored once before half-time and twice in the final 12 minutes to complete their famous victory.

Sports are still 11 points clear at the top of the table, but have a tricky game at third-placed Stewart Lloyds on Tuesday (February 16).

Biurne maintained sixth place as goals from Craig Rook and top scorer Zak Munton secured a 2-1 win at Bugbrooke St Michaels, while second-half strikes from Jacob Smitheringale and Addie Staffieri delivered a 2-0 away win for Blackstones at Irchester. Stones are 13th in the table.

In the Premier Division there was joy for Yaxley and for striker Phil Stebbing. Stebbing was struck down by injury following his summer move from Peterborough Northern Star, but he’s back in action now and claimed his first goal for the club in a 3-2 win at home to Harborough.

It was goalless at half-time and Yaxley twice fell behind before goals from Dan Cotton and Matt Nolan dragged them level. Stebbing struck the winner seven minutes from time.

Deeping scored in the first minute, but conceded in the last minute as they fought out a thrilling 4-4 draw at lowly Sileby Rangers. Scott Coupland and Scott Mooney scored twice apiece for fourth-placed Deeping.

Goals from Rob Hughes, Billy Smith and a penalty from Adam Millson enabled Wisbech to win 3-0 at relegation-threatened Wellingborough, while captain Luke Smith netted at both ends as Peterborough Northern Star were beaten 2-1 at home by Cogenhoe.

Stamford AFC continue to fight hard against relegation from the Evo Stik Northern Premier Division. They left it late yesterday before sealing a 1-0 win over mid-table Frickley at the Zeeco Stadium. Jake Newman popped up with the only goal three minutes from the end, but ‘The Daniels’ remain five points from safety having played more games than their relegation rivals.

Play-off chasing Spalding United were disappointed with their 1-1 draw in Division One South at rock bottom Tividale.

It looked like a victory for the formbook when Tom Waumsley shot ‘The Tulips’ ahead after nine minutes, but the hosts equalised before the break.

Ondre Odain’s headed equaliser for March Town United in their Thurlow Nunn Division One game at King’s Lynn Reserves proved in vain as the home side claimed a winner early in the second-half.
