PETERBOROUGH LEAGUE: Ramsey snatch an automatic promotion slot, play-off matches coming up

The final promotion winners in the Peterborough League will be determined by a series of play-off matches this week.

Ramsey Town FC pinched the second automatic slot in Division Three yesterday (May 14) by winning 6-4 at Stamford Lions Reserves. The hosts just needed a draw to finish second and rise to Division Two, but now they will need to win a play-off game on Tuesday (May 17) against Tydd St Mary to go up.

Tydd won their final league game of the season 10-3 at Whittlesey Athletic B to pip Thorpe Wood Rangers to the last play-off slot. Stuart Easey (3), Maxwell Burrell (2), Timothy Lowe (2), Dale Parnell, Scott Pemberton and Andrew Cook scored the Tydd goals.

Eye United, who finished fourth, host fifth-placed Bretton North End, in the other play-off match. The winners of both games will be promoted to Division Two.

It’s a different story in Division Two with only one promotion place up for grabs for three play-off contenders.

Spalding Town host Ketton Reserves in a semi-final on Tuesday, but the winners will also have to beat Peterborough Polonia in a play-off final at Yaxley FC on Saturday (May 21) to win promotion. Polonia are through to that final as fourth-placed finishers in Division Two, Whittlesey Athletic A cannot go up as the club’s reserve team already competes in Division One.

Spalding warmed up for the play-offs in grand style. They hammered Thorney Reserves 17-0 yesterday with Marcus Parry claiming a double hat-trick. Danny Kingman and Glen Wells had to settle for three goals apiece.

Due to the restructuring of the league, six teams will be promoted from Division Four and eight teams will be promoted from Division Five.

Nine new teams are likely to be entered into the Peterborough League for the 2016-17 season.

Cardea are expected to go straight into Division Four, while AFC Orton, British School of Sports, Eunice Huntingdon FC, Feeder Reserves, Glinton & Northborough Res, NECI Peterborough, Orton Rangers and Wisbech Town Acorns will be placed in Division Five.

Stamford Lions and Wisbech Town Reserves have been promoted into the Premier League. Riverside will be relegated into Division One, while Whittlesey Athletic have left the league to join the United Counties League.

Parkside Reserves have withdrawn from the league for next season. Guyhirn and Riverside Reserves withdrew during the current season.

Whittlesey Athletic won their last-ever Premier Division match 3-0 at Uppingham Town yesterday. Liam Harrold, Sam Donohoe and an own goal did the damage for a team that kept 23 clean sheets and conceded just 17 goals in 34 Premier Division matches.

Whittlesey finished second behind champions Moulton harrox who failed in their bid to complete a league and cup double. They lost 1-0 to local rivals Pinchbeck United who won the game late on with a goal from Tyler Wright. Moulton’s Bobby Patterson and Benjamin Allen were both sent off by referee Martin Reed.

Netherton United finished fourth in the top flight after losing just two matches all season. Chris Hansford, Adam Scott and Ash Jackson scored their goals in a 3-1 final day win at Peterborough Sports Reserves.

Philip Wells scored a hat-trick for Stilton, but finished on the losing side against Thorney.

Bottom club Riverside finish the season on five points after drawing their final game 1-1 at Sawtry. Bradley Kemp scored for Riverside.
