Daniels appoint Andrew Wilson as manager

Wilson, who has previously managed Harborough Town, Histon and Corby Town, was this morning (September 24) named as successor to David Staff, who left the club on Tuesday (September 22).

His appointment takes effect immediately and he will be working with the squad ahead of Sunday’s crucial FA Cup tie at Coleshill.

Wilson said: “I am absolutely delighted to be here. Now that I am, my task is to take us further in the cup while also preparing for the Evo-Stick Northern Premier challenges which lie ahead.

“Having worked with several of the players at different clubs, and watched others play, I know there are some talented individuals here and I will be talking to them all very quickly. It’s a fresh start. There will no doubt be comings and goings. That is inevitable if we want to build for the future. Where decisions need making, I will make them.

“For instance we can score goals, no doubt, but we can’t go on giving them away as we have. That has to be addressed.”

The Daniels currently lie 21st in the league, five points above bottom club Ramsbottom United. They have struggled to keep the ball out of their own net this season, and the board decided to act after they were beaten 7-1 away at Hyde on Monday (September 21).

Wilson, 39, was a central midfielder with Southern League, Premier Division Corby in his playing days. He has promised Daniels fans that he wants to play a brand of entertaining football which will meet with their approval.

“But,” he warned, “If results need grinding out, that’s what we’ll do.

“We need the ability to play in numerous ways. That can be influenced by conditions, by the time of year and, of course, by the sort of teams we play. Obviously, we aren’t going to get it right every time but we’ll improve as we go along.”

Wilson began his management career in his home town of Market Harborough where he was involved with the United Counties League club for eight years. He managed them to three promotions in five years, also involving himself with obtaining a great deal of sponsorship to help improve facilities.

Harborough Town are now an established Premier Division club.

He joined Histon Town as assistant manager in 2012 when they were sitting second bottom of Conference North. They eventually stayed up on the final day, preserving their status with a threadbare budget and a squad which had an average age of 19.

Following that, he became joint manager of Corby Town with Tommy Wright, the pair dragging the Steelmen away from a second bottom to finish seventh just outside the play off positions.

When the club budget collapsed - at the time Paul Malone came to Stamford - Andrew left and has, in the short term, scouted for Barrow of Conference North and has been fulfilling a similar role with Championship club Reading’s first team.

Wilson said: “I really am thrilled to be here. This is a great club which has given me a great opportunity. I relish the future.”
