Matthew Senter was in record-breaking form for Peterborough Cycling Club at the weekend.

The King’s Lynn-based postman took part in the national 25-mile time-trial championships on a course near Norwich and finished 32nd in a club record 51:03.

James Gelsthorpe recorded an equally impressive 51:38 for 42nd place while the third Peterborough CC rider to have qualified for the championships - Christophe Demoulin - clocked 52:27 for 54th place.

The club’s second claim member Brett Harwood recorded 49:01 to finish 13th.

Defending champion Ryan Perry, a British Army captain, recorded an eye-watering 46:31.

The women’s 25-mile time trial National Championships, promoted by Peterborough CC, took place on the old A1 course based around Sawtry and Peterborough’s Claire Steels finished an excellent 22nd from a field of 64 with her time of 1:02:52. The race winner was defending champion Hayley Simmonds in 54:57.

The Peterborough road race team contested the Rockingham Speedway event and Paul Johnson claimed second place.

FENLAND CLARION

Fenland Clarion had two riders in action in the national 25-mile time-trial championships. Dave Langlands was 41st in 51:37 and Paul Lilley 94th in 55:11.

In the junior national 25-mile time-trial championship on the Sawtry based N1/25 course, Jerry Norman finished in 62.21 for 15th place, while Ethan Nightingale competed for the first time over 25 miles and finished in a very creditable 69.49.

In the VTTA event Simon Pitchford set a new personal best for 25 miles when he clocked 55:40 to beat his previous best of 56:42 that he set in 2013.

Fenland Clarion’s Ruby Issac had a successful week in Under 8 races with a first and a third place at two Mallory Park meetings and another third place on the Darley Moor circuit.

COME AND TRY IT

Fenland Clarion are holding an open evening for any aspiring young cyclists who might like to get involved in cycling for sporting or recreational reasons.

The evening will give youngsters and their parents an opportunity to see the range of cycling activities on offer for local youngsters.

The event will be held at the Embankment athletics arena on Friday August 19 with a 6.30pm start.
