This is the shocking moment a car veered onto the wrong side of a Cambridgeshire Fenland road and hit two horses and their riders.

Amazingly neither of the animals or riders were killed and all four are said to be recovering well.

The incident took place at 11.30am on Friday, March 3, in Witcham between Chatteris and Ely.

One of the riders was taken to hospital as a precaution but has since been released.

A family member of the driver said he was now in hospital having suffered a suspected stroke at the wheel of the car.

Leanne Scotney-Buddle said on Facebook: “Ok, this is horrific to watch but sadly this is my uncle who is an amazing man and a retired fire man who spent his life saving people and being a first response at the most horrible accidents.

“He was taken ill at the wheel and is still in hospital today. We are all thankful the horse and rider are ok but please spare a thought for his children and family as it’s a hard time.”

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: “Both the riders and horses were not seriously injured. We are investigating the incident and are making inquiries.”

Police confirmed nobody has yet been arrested.

Witcham Equestrian Centre said on Facebook: “Two horses from WEC were involved in a road accident today through no fault of their own or their riders.

“Patsy was hit by a car but has been treated by the vet and we will keep you up to date with her recovery over the coming weeks. Jane Huck, Verity & Fleur are bruised and shocked.”

The centre subsequently posted: “We would like to say that we are very grateful for the concern that people have shown for both the horses and riders involved in yesterday’s accident.

“We will post progress on the horses as appropriate. Patsy had a good night last night and was eagerly looking for treats this morning! Fleur also was fine this morning. Riders are stiff but ok.

“We will not be commenting upon the video which has become public and the matter is being dealt with by the police.”
