Stamford and Borough, the big guns of local rugby 40 years ago, fought out a 4-4 draw in 1977.

20 YEARS AGO

POSH: Only two of the 10 apprentices at London Road were offered contracts. Centre-forward Chris Cleaver and winger Mark McKeever accepted three-year deals but Rob Ackroyd, Michael Edwards, Jonathan Hotchkiss, Nicky Houston, Sean McCafferty, Neil Miller, Noel O’Donnell and Simon Wilson were released.

POSH: Ricky Otto was sent off for serious foul play as Barry Fry’s side were held to a 1-1 draw at London Road by Chesterfield in Division Two. Otto got the goal before seeing red. Three days later Posh beat Watford 2-1, also at home, with goals by Ken Charlery and Aidy Boothroyd.

ATHLETICS: Rachel Stone from Ken Stimpson School placed ninth out of 350 in the junior girls race at the English Schools Cross-Country Championships in Newark.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates were celebrating after picking up their first win in 36 Premier League games. They beat Telford 6-2 with goals by Darren Cotton (2), Stuart Parker, Cassie Dawkins, Jon Cotton and Andy Carter.

RUGBY: Borough beat Wellingborough 25-14 in a Courage League match with tries by Rob Morley and Rich Martin.

30 YEARS AGO

ICE HOCKEY: Garry Unger scored a hat-trick as Peterborough Pirates beat Slough Jets 11-5 at the East of England Ice Rink.

RUGBY: Borough paid the price for a dreadful first half against Loughborough. They trailed 24-0 at the break before recovering in the second half. They eventually lost 34-22 with skipper Danny Kitching and wingers Alan Griffin (2) and Kev Roe scoring tries.

HOCKEY: Goals by Neville Keir, Mike Yeoman and man-of-the-match Phil Webber earned Peterborough Town a 3-2 win over Bury St Edmunds.

FOOTBALL: Despite having Barry Hand sent off, Blackstones still managed to beat Olney 2-1 to keep their UCL Division One promotion hopes alive. Craig Goldsmith and John Morley scored.

POSH: Noel Cantwell’s Division Four title-chasers suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at relegation-threatened Rochdale. Dave Gregory came on as a sub and hit the two Posh goals.

POSH: Goals by Micky Nuttell and Garry Butterworth gave Tommy Robson’s Posh Youths team a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest in the Midlands Intermediate League.

40 YEARS AGO

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town’s Brian Bayston and Duncan Parkes were in the Cambridgeshire side that drew 0-0 with Essex.

POSH: It was a black Saturday for Noel Cantwell’s team. They lost 1-0 at home to an average Bury side in Division Three and had star midfielder Bob Doyle sent off.

FOOTBALL: Eye United remained second behind King’s Lynn Reserves in the Peterborough League Premier Division after a 4-1 win over Peterborough Rovers. John Jenkins (2), Steve Hurry and Mel Landin got their goals.

FOOTBALL: In the Peterborough Youth League Minor Cup semi-finals Focus hammered Thorney 15-1 with Charlie Takla scoring five times and Ian Cross four. In the other semi-final two Dennis Ilsley goals earned Whittlesey Blue Star a 2-1 win over New England.

RUGBY: In the big local derby between Borough and Stamford it finished all square at 4-4. Pete Levoi scored the Borough try with Hugh McSloy replying for Stamford.

RUGBY: The next day Borough beat St Ives 22-15 in the first round of the Evening Telegraph Cup at the Old Showground. Stand-in skipper Alan Keeley, Tich Ireson, George Novakovic and Geoff Atkins crossed for their tries.

50 YEARS AGO

POSH: Mike Beesley scored his first goal of the season to earn Gordon Clark’s side a 1-0 home win against Scunthorpe. England Under 23 player John Kirkham made his Posh debut.

POSH: Goalkeeper Willie Duff, centre-half Jim Walker and full-backs David Beaver and Dick Kwiatowski were all outstanding for Posh Reserves, but they couldn’t prevent a 2-0 defeat at Football Combination League champions Tottenham Hotspur Reserves.

FOOTBALL: Stanground School’s Ken Wade scored a cracking goal as Peterborough Boys Under 14s beat Northampton 3-1 at Alma Road in a Midland Federation Cup game.

RUGBY: Borough prop Pete Savage was rushed to hospital with a badly cut head after just five minutes against Loughborough Colleges but Borough went on to win 11-3.

HOCKEY: Co-op were big winners on the mixed hockey front. They thrashed Perkins 7-0 with goals by Malc Irwin (3), Arthur Blood (3) and Brian Townsend.

FOOTBALL: John Palmer (2) and Les Allen hit the goals as Whittlesey United beat Chatteris Reserves 3-1 to reach the Peterborough League Intermediate Cup final.
