Political View: Celebrating the best of Peterborough
“The first couple of months of this civic year have already demonstrated the best of Peterborough”
Serving as Deputy Mayoress of Peterborough during the first couple of months of this civic year has been a privilege. Alongside Deputy Mayor Cllr Andrew Bond, I have had the honour of supporting Mayor Cllr Chris Harper and Mayoress Rita Harper as they celebrate the people and communities that make Peterborough a special place to call home.

This year, the Mayor has chosen to support the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Little Miracles and Peterborough Women's Aid. The months ahead will bring opportunities to raise awareness and support causes that mean a great deal to many local families.
One experience that will stay with me for a long time is attending citizenship ceremonies. Meeting individuals and families as they officially become British citizens is both humbling and inspiring. The pride, joy and excitement in the room is remarkable to witness, and sharing such a significant moment in people's lives is a true privilege. These ceremonies remind us that Peterborough's diversity is one of our greatest strengths and that our city is enriched by the many cultures, traditions and experiences that people bring with them.

That same spirit has been evident at the Portuguese Festival and the European Festival. Seeing communities come together through music, food, dance and friendship was uplifting and joyful. People of all backgrounds celebrated side by side, demonstrating the openness, warmth and sense of belonging that Peterborough is rightly proud of. These occasions show that our differences should be celebrated and that they help make our city stronger and more welcoming.
For me personally, returning to Park Lane Nursery was truly meaningful. Having been one of the setting's first apprentices in 2012, when it was known as St Thomas More Catholic Nursery, it was wonderful to see how it has grown and evolved while remaining a welcoming place for children and families. The dedication of the staff and the diversity within the nursery reflect the very best of early years education in Peterborough.
Other engagements have reflected the breadth and strength of our communities. The Armed Forces flag raising and Armed Forces Weekend brought residents together to honour those who serve and have served our country, while the Windrush flag raising celebrated the contribution of the Windrush generation to our city and nation. The Firebreak pass out parade at Stanground Fire Station showcased the confidence and teamwork of local young people, and a visit to Park House Nursing Home highlighted the wisdom and kindness that connect generations across Peterborough.
Whether welcoming new citizens, celebrating our European communities, recognising the legacy of the Windrush generation, supporting young people through Firebreak or spending time with older residents at Park House, one message has been clear. Peterborough's greatest strength is its people. Our diversity, compassion and community spirit are what make this such a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family.

The first couple of months of this civic year have already demonstrated the best of Peterborough. I look forward to meeting residents and celebrating the stories that shape our city. If your organisation is hosting an event, we would love to hear from you.
