80s classic sitcom Hi-de-Hi! coming to a Peterborough stage

The much-loved television sitcom Hi-de-Hi! is set for a lively revival next month, as Yaxley Amateur Players present a musical stage adaptation at Yaxley Public Hall.

Following the success of previous productions inspired by classic British comedies – including ’Allo ’Allo! in 2010 and Dad’s Army in 2013 – the group now turns its attention to this iconic 1980s series.

Set in the late 1950s, Hi-de-Hi! follows the colourful lives of the staff at Maplins holiday camp, where entertainment, ambition and gossip are always in full swing.

The story opens at the beginning of the 1959 holiday season.

With founder Joe Maplin planning a new camp in the Bahamas, excitement builds around the annual ‘Miss Yellowcoat’ competition, which will determine which lucky Yellowcoats are selected to work overseas. Meanwhile, camp manager Jeffrey Fairbrother has his own ideas about the perfect candidate.

Elsewhere, camp comic Ted finds himself resorting to increasingly desperate money-making schemes when his ex-wife arrives at the camp accompanied by a bailiff. Ballroom dancers Yvonne and Barry Stuart-Hargreaves add to the drama, while rumours spread rapidly after sports organiser Gladys is spotted escorting Jeffrey to his chalet late one evening.

Director Jason Wilson said: “This promises to be a fantastic nostalgic show, packed with comedy, music and audience participation.

"The cast and crew are working incredibly hard to transform Yaxley Public Hall into Maplins holiday camp, and audiences are in for a real treat. It’s a family-friendly production, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone.”

Founded in 1979, Yaxley Amateur Players have staged more than 100 productions, spanning musical variety shows, comedies, murder mysteries and pantomimes.

The group is always keen to welcome new members, both on stage and behind the scenes—no experience necessary. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm at Yaxley Public Hall.

Hi-de-Hi! will be performed on: June 26 and 27 at Yaxley Public Hall.
