Peterborough Rugby Club hosted an ambitious Covid-compliant ‘Summer Training Camp’ at their Fengate base last weekend, with almost 100 children enjoying a free day of rugby union.

Twenty four volunteer coaches from the club gave up their day to allow 96 youngsters – many of them girls – to enjoy a day of rugby-related fun in a safe environment.

A second free day takes place this Saturday (August 29, 10am-2pm) and it is not too late to register to take part. Anyone interested should contact [email protected].

“I never thought it would be possible to stage such a fantastic event,” said the club’s coaching co-ordinator Jordan Smithson. “We had players from Spalding, Bourne, Huntingdon and Peterborough Lions rugby clubs joining our own youngsters, and someone even came all the way from Norfolk to take part.

“Thanks to the great team of volunteer coaches we have at the club, we were able to put this on completely free of charge, and it was great to see a lot of the young people trying rugby for the first time and enjoying themselves.

“Several have already joined the club as a result of it and that’s wonderful.”

Many hours of planning ensured the event took place in full compliance with the UK Governments Covid-19 regulations.
