Oscar 'stoked' to claim a big cycle race win on a motor racing circuit

Peterborough Cycling Club star Oscar Smith claimed a thrilling victory in a Criterium League race on a motor racing circuit at Darley Moor in Derbyshire.

Smith’s success, by half a bike length, arrived in an Open Category race after he led home a breakaway group.

Smith said: “I stayed hidden from the wind for the first 20 minutes while lots of attacks took place and then at the 20 minute mark a group started to go up the road and I launched a big move to get across into that group.

"For the next five minutes three of us worked hard to make the break stick with a number of small groups trying to get across but failing to bridge. Eventually, a group of four broke off and chased us, but only one rider made it across to us.

"From there we continued to keep the pace high and with two laps to go we had one minute on the peloton. On the final lap we all sat up and watched each other and our lead came down to 30 seconds but, with around 100m to the line, I snapped away and it was basically a 4-way drag race to the line where I got across first by about a wheel/half a bike length.

"I was absolutely stoked to get the win!”

Darley Moor Airfield and Road Race Circuit is situated on a high plateau adjacent to the A515, two miles south of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England.
