County bowls hat-trick for Tom and doubles all round for others in Stamford
The Northants Bowling Federation indoor county finals at Stamford on Sunday saw Tom Newman-Borrett claim a hat-trick of titles, and four other players will head to the national finals at Lincoln next month chasing title doubles.
Newman-Borrett teamed up with Ian Smith to win the pairs, and then Smith's wife Michelle joined them to claim the mixed triples before he linked up with Michael Humphreys and Stephen Harris to edge out defending national triples title holders Paul Dalliday, Simon Law and Tristan Morton.
The one title that got away was the mixed pairs with Michelle Smith as Lyn and Kevin Tuck made up for their final disappointment last year. Lyn Tuck picked up a second title in a triples with Shirley Suffling and substitute Elaine Upton.
Michelle Smith had also qualified in four events, but had to be content with just the mixed triples title. She lost in the singles to Hazel Brewin, who missed out on a singles double when losing in the senior singles to Elizabeth Wallace, who then partnered Chris Ford to the ladies pairs title.
Stephen Harris, who is in action for England in Ireland this week alongside recently crowned UK Indoor Open champion Nick Brett from Yaxley, retained his singles crown at the expense of John Holroyd, while Martyn Dolby remains on course for a third national veterans title in a row after defeating Kevin Vinter.
Young Ollie Jeapes will also be bidding for a hat-trick of titles at Lincoln having qualified unchallenged in the under 25 singles.
