No names have been mentioned, but it’s known that Posh want players with Championship experience to help them survive in the second tier next season.
Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony said: “I’ve had several chats with agents and players who are out of contract and it’s remarkable that some still expect wages in the region of £50k a week.
“Obviously they won’t be getting that here.
“I have lists of players who have become available since the end of last season. There aren’t many surprise names on them.
“Trust me, myself, Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson are working hard on them.”
MacAnthony believes Posh need eight new players to build a squad able to compete at Championship level. He says six bids have already been made.
“We want to thrive in the Championship,” MacAnthony added. “We’re not going up there just to try and survive.”
It’s thought Posh are unlikely to sign anyone this month to avoid paying June wages, but MacAnthony and Ferguson would doubtless like newcomers to be on the plane to Portugal for the pre-season training camp in July.
The Peterborough Telegraph has a list of available, potential and downright fanciful targets right here...

JUNIOR HOILETT: Junior Hoillet. Position: Winger. Age: 30. Status: Released by Cardiff City. This exciting attacking player has enjoyed a long Championship career with Blackburn, QPR and Cardiff, but he's probably not defensively reliable enough for a team managed by disciplinarian Mick McCarthy. Hoillett spent five seasons in South Wales and represented the club in the Premier League as well as the Championship. As he's a Canadian international he could attract the attention of two of the Posh ownership team! Hoilett's fitness record has been better than his consistency though and he'd have to drop his wage demands if Posh did show an interest. If Posh go down the expected route of 3-4-1-2 it's difficult to see how Hoillett would fit in. (Photo by Lewis Storey/Getty Images).

DAN CROWLEY: Position: Central midfield. Age: 23. Status: Released by Birmingham City so available on a free. This former Arsenal boy wonder's career hasn't exactly panned out as expected, but he's still only 23 so he can't be written off just yet. I'm not sure Posh can afford to take a punt on a player being able to finally fulfil potential and if Crowley couldn't hold down a regular place in Hull City's League One side while on loan at the KCOM Stadium last term why would he be considered good enough to start for Posh in the Championship? SAMMY AMEOBI: Position: Winger. Age: 29. Status: Released by Nottingham Forest so available on a free transfer. Nottingham Forest finally lost patience with an erratic winger, yet regular starter, after two years at the City Ground. Ameobi managed just eight goals in 77 Championship appearances for Forest. Posh are just as likely to stick with Joe Ward and Idris Kanu as their right-wing options than they are to sign Ameobi despite his knowledge of the Championship. (Photo by Naomi Baker/Getty Images).

KAMIL GROSICKI: Position: Attacking midfield. Age: 32. Status: Released by West Brom so available on a free transfer. What a top player this attacking midfielder looked when playing for Hull City at Championship level. His departure and that of Jarred Bowen prompted a dramatic decline in form and, ultimately, relegation for the Tigers in the 2019-20 season. But, surprisingly, Grosicki failed to make an impact at West Brom and he played more for Poland than his club side last season. Grosicki has ruled out a return to his homeland as he believes he can still do a job for a club in one of Europe's big leagues. No chance for Posh then. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images).
