No names have been mentioned, but it’s known that Posh want players with Championship experience to help them survive in the second tier next season.
Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony said: “I’ve had several chats with agents and players who are out of contract and it’s remarkable that some still expect wages in the region of £50k a week.
“Obviously they won’t be getting that here.
“I have lists of players who have become available since the end of last season. There aren’t many surprise names on them.
“Trust me, myself, Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson are working hard on them.”
MacAnthony believes Posh need eight new players to build a squad able to compete at Championship level. He says six bids have already been made.
“We want to thrive in the Championship,” MacAnthony added. “We’re not going up there just to try and survive.”
It’s thought Posh are unlikely to sign anyone this month to avoid paying June wages, but MacAnthony and Ferguson would doubtless like newcomers to be on the plane to Portugal for the pre-season training camp in July.
The Peterborough Telegraph has a list of available, potential and downright fanciful targets right here...

9.
SCOTT TWINE: Position: Midfielder. Age: 21. Status: Considering a new contract at Swindon. Twine is reportedly considering lengthening his stay at his hometown club, but he’s bound to get offers from better teams after a breakout season with struggling Swindon. But a midfielder with a habit of scoring long-range screamers couldn’t have delivered a much worse audition when Posh won 3-0 at Swindon in a League One fixture in April. Twine was poor, cautioned for diving and showed signs of petulance towards the officials which are apparently not uncommon. And, as Posh are looking for Championship-ready players, if they have an interest in Twine it will probably be parked for now. Central midfield is a problem position for Posh, but there have to be better options out there. (Photo by Pete Norton/Getty Images).

JACK WILSHERE: Position: Centre-midfield. Age: 29. Status: Released by Bournemouth so available on a free, but injured probably. The classiest name on any list of released and available players outside the Premier League and what a surge of interest there would be at Posh if they managed to sign a full England international. Wilshere would be a massive influence on the current Posh midfield and the club’s younger players, but it would be a considerable risk to use much of the budget on a player whose fitness cannot be guaranteed. A fanciful target at best. (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images).

RYAN WINTLE: Position central midfield. Age: 23. Status: Rejected a new deal at Crewe so available on a free transfer. James Mayley describes Wintle as a better version of Reece Brown and he will doubtless have enjoyed a strong education in his Crewe career which started in the club's famed Academy. No Championship experience is a drawback, but Wintle is a fine passer of the ball whose presence would enable Jack Taylor to play further forward and increase his goalscoring contribution. Wintle is another who won't be short of admirers in the Championship, but he'd be more likely to play regularly at Posh. (Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images).

MARIO VRANCIC: Position: Central midfield. Age: 32. Status: Just released by Norwich City. If it's Championship experience you want, look no further than a Bosnian midfielder who has helped Norwich to two second tier titles. His age and waning influence at first-team level prompted the Canaries to release him ahead of a return to the Premier League. Vrancic is unlikely to be short of offers from Championship clubs and doubtless some would be bigger, better and higher payers than Posh. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images).
